Guten Tag!

We had already touched upon the topic of cases and discussed the Nominative case in detail. Today we will try to understand the Accusative, Dative and Genitive cases. If you are a native English speaker it may be a weird experience for you but don’t lose hope!

Case

The Case is like food colour. You add it to the icing and it will change its colour to whatever you want. Just like green food colour is added to icing that is used to create leaves, the Case is used to mutate the raw word to define its purpose in the sentence.

English uses word order to distinguish between cases but German is flexible with word order.

Nominative Case

Nominative is the subject of the sentence or the person performing a task.

1. Die Puppe ist schön.

  • The doll is beautiful.

2. Er ist schnell.

  • He is fast.

Accusative Case

Accusative is the direct object of the sentence.

1. The man brings the cake.

  • Der Mann bringt den Kuchen.

Notice how ‘the cake’ is not der Kuchen but den Kuchen.

This is because the in german changes form in Accusative. So even if you change the word order the meaning remains the same.

  • Den Kuchen bringt der Mann.

Der changes in accusative like this-

Yes! You saw that right der only changes its form in accusative with masculine.

2. The woman brings the book.

  • Die Frau bringt das Buch.

Das Buch is Accusative but it doesn’t change because Der in neutral accusative remains the same.

Similarly ein or a changes in Accusative-

1. She eats a fish.

  • Sie isst einen Fisch.

Note that ein Fisch changes to einen Fisch.

Then there some words with drags accusative with them. For example-

Für

The woman brings gifts for the man.

Die Frau bringt Geschenke für den Mann.

Durch

I go through the Laptop.

Ich gehe durch den Laptop.

Special words with accusative companies.

That’s all for today!

Danke! Drück mir die Daumen in den Kommentaren Tschüss.

Wish me Luck in the comments.

  • Note how den Kommentaren is used. It is because the Dative case in the plural is used here. We will learn about them more in the next lessons. Till then bye-bye!
